How much does she weigh?

No scale on the farm? Two measurements with a tape give a close estimate for a cow or buffalo, in kg and pounds.

70 × 70 × 60 ÷ 660, in inches. A tape is close but not exact. Use the same tape each time to see the change.

How to measure.

This is Schaeffer's formula, the one livestock extension services have taught for decades. It is usually within 5 to 10% for grown cattle and buffaloes.

  1. 1

    Stand her straight

On level ground, head up, all four legs square. A soft cloth tape measure is best.
  2. 2

    Around the chest

Right behind the front legs, all the way round, snug but not tight. This is the heart girth.
  3. 3

    Along the body

From the point of the shoulder to the pin bone near the tail, in a straight line.
  4. 4

    Measure again next month

One weight is a guess; the change over months tells you if she is gaining. For medicine doses, ask your vet.

See every animal’s weight over time.

In Cattlo, a tape weight is two numbers on the phone. Each animal keeps her weights and feed on one page, so a calf falling behind shows early.
